The story is set in a world where implanted microchips can record all moments of an individual’s life. The chips are removed upon death so the images can be edited into a highlight reel for loved ones who want to remember the deceased.
It seems that is rare to find an excellent science fiction movie that was released within the last fifteen years. Just consider that Highlander : The Source directed by Brett Leonard has probably done more damage to the franchise then Highlander 2 : The quickening.
Robin Williams was brilliant in The Final Cut coming across as somebody who has seen to much of life and as a result seemed to have closed himself off from the rest of the world.
The concept of Final cut is brilliant, what would happen if our entire life were, recorded by a microchip that was implanted into our brain at birth? It would definitely change our interpersonal relationships if we were being recorded every hour of every day of our lives only to have ‘the best’ of our memories put into a highlight reel after our death and put on show for all our loved ones. I suppose the questions are should we ever have our own personal ‘highlight reels’ as depicted in The Final Cut and more importantly would you want a stranger editing together your own ‘highlight reel’ when you die?. However, with all the spy satellites, security surveillance cameras and teenagers with cameras in their mobile phones we are possibly or for that matter probably (depending how paranoid you are) already being filmed 24/7 when will we get our own personal ‘highlight reel’ ?
