Set in the near future, where robot boxing is a top sport, a struggling promoter feels he’s found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.
Even though Real Steel, is based on the 1956 short story ‘steel’ by American author Richard Matheson it is very clear that the movie appears to have been cinematically inspired by the Rocky franchise. We will only know how much the filmmakers where inspired by the Rocky franchise should the rumoured Real steel ever come to be.
There is a real intensity to the boxing, which should impress fans of action movies because Sugar Ray Leonard was the boxing consultant and the motion capture added that humanistic edge to the robot fighters’ boxing styles.
Admittedly the story is a little stereotypical particularly the relationship between Charlie and Max Kenton. But in spite of the stereotypical story and father & son relationship Real Steel is a watchable movie.
