I know it seems strange but full time workers in Australia are stockpiling their holidays. I will say it again Australian full time workers are stockpiling their holidays.
According to a report released by Tourism Australia as of December of 2008, Australian workers had amassed 123 million days of leave, which equates to $33.3 billion in wages. The current figures show for the year ending in September of 2011 show that the total number of leave days has increased to 129 million of annual leave, worth $40 billion in wages.
The Australian adult workforce is entitled to an average of 20 annual leave days per year and according to the latest annual global Vacation Deprivation® survey from Expedia®, Australia ranks fifth tied with Canada with 15 days of annual leave taken. While Japan ranked number one in the world with a total of only 5 annual leave days taken.
On the other end of the survey table for the fifth year, running France has ranked as the most holiday-rich nation, despite annual leave days dropping from 37.5 to 30 days. It should be noted that French workers have used every single one of their 30 leave days.
