City kid Ren MacCormack moves to a small town where rock ‘n’ roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace.
From the beginning, it is clear that director Craig Brewer has not lost sight of the origins of Footloose considering that he scattered several nods throughout the movie to the ’84 original.
Even though this is a humble remake, it is so refreshing to see a “dance flick” that actually has a decent plot behind it. I have seriously hated dance flicks with a passion for the longest time because most of these movies that I have laboured through have plots that have been recycled so much that the plot has gone stale.
Kenny Wormald had an interesting presence about him. However, there is one thing I might need to throw this open to get a definitive judgement on, where there times throughout the movie where he almost slipped into a thick Boston accent?
Julianne Hough gave a brilliant performance as Ariel and I could not help but draw comparisons from her character to Brooke Nevin’s character Sierra Silver in David Lee Miller’s movie My Suicide. The two characters seem very similar, and Ariel could have taken that darker turn if the Moore family had not addressed their communication problems.
