Memo is desperate to escape his tiny Mexican hometown, and his radio intercept allows him a glimpse at the outside world. Soon he overhears a top-secret conversation he never should have had access to, and now he and his family are targets. When he finally does leave his home for Tijuana, he is on the run. When he meets pretty Luz in the new city, she offers him friendship and the technology he needs to get a job, but she may also put his life in danger.
This was the first time that I had watched a movie directed by Alex Rivera. I was particularly impressed by a story device that could be described as being a ‘Reverse Matrix’. Rivera used this device by having people hook their consciousness up to the internet to do all the jobs people do not want to do. This is an evolution of the whole concept of the migrant worker. With the earth’s dwindling resources Rivera made an interesting point about corporate greed, and how far corporations would go to protect a vital resource such as water. I particularly enjoyed the love story that developed between the characters of Memo and Luz.
