Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.
It is clear from the start that with Red State that Kevin Smith has gone full circle and has returned to his independent filmmaking roots because Red State has a similar aura to that of Clerks. I suppose if I was to put my finger on it. It seems that Smith used a similar camera on each of the movies.
However, Red State is nothing like Clerks or any other movie that he has directed before. Unlike other directors, it seems that Smith worked his way up to Red State. When production started on Red State he was actually capable of delivering a credible action movie that seemed to have some eerie parallels to actions taken by other evangelical cults.
Personally, I have always found Televangelists interesting. Not every single one of them but there is a few of them that I will spend time to watch because of their charisma, even though I do not consider myself a religious person. Michael Parks gave a brilliant performance as an evangelical preacher that had the similar sense of charisma but wielded it for his own evil purposes rather than for good.
