The navies of the world are pitched against an invading alien force set on taking over the world in order to access its water supply. Trapped inside a 300-mile wide alien force field with no communications, 5 human ships battle 5 alien ships.

In case you were wondering, Battleship was originally realised by Milton Bradley Company over 80 years ago. Now the link between the “source material” and the feature film is tenuous at best especially considering that the game had nothing resembling pre-existing storyline. It really was a bold choice by the filmmakers to turn this into a science fiction “yah for humanity” movie and ended up delivering a storyline that had about the same number of unpredictable plot points as a late night Kebab. The only thing that Battleship really delivered on was the explosions.
It was kind of depressing that despite a rather impressive cast but nobody really gave a stellar performance. Battleship did mark singer Rihanna’s debut as an actress though I would have thought more consideration would have been taken for her first feature film.
In closing, I feel compelled to paraphrase the Muppets Statler and Waldorf by saying that movies like Battleship have an educational value because they will inspire people to read more books.
