I was conflicted about this movie. I wasn’t sure what I was letting myself in for. My first instincts being that I was going to be watching a historical epic, a romance. What was delivered by Sofia Coppola was an autobiography showing the treatment of Marie Antoinette by her husband and Louis XVI and the French Court.
Dunst is brilliant in her portrayal of the Queen and is clearly suited to character arc from innocent, a party girl, a loving mother and a devoted wife. Yes Marie Atoinette was a misunderstood figure as this film suggests. It would appear that she was a woman that was driven to excess by circumstance. But in the end some of the blame still has to lay with Marie because she made the choice.
