Baron Manfred von Richthofen is the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in World War I. To him and his companions, air combats are events of sporty nature, technical challenge and honourable acting, ignoring the terrible extent of war. But after falling in love with the nurse KÄte, Manfred realizes he is only used for propaganda means. Caught between his disgust for the war, and the responsibility for his fighter wing, von Richthofen sets out to fly again.
I find it interesting to think that during one of the most horrific perriods of world history an effort was made to maintain a certain level of dignity and sportsmanship by the fighter pilots, while the rest of the world seemed to falling apart as it was involved in World War 1. It would be fair to say that during this age of terror this sense of dignity has been forgotten.
This movie is brilliant and it was made even more special by the on screen presance of Matthias Schweighofer who played Baron Manfred von Richthofen. But this goes much further then just Schweighofer’s performance. All the actors really brought something special to this film.
