Here is something for you to think about the next time you enjoy a bowl of chicken soup according to recent research released by the Australian Chicken Meat Federation shows that the majority of Australians (58%) enjoy chicken soup when they have cold and flu symptoms with an overwhelming 87% those opting for it because it makes them feel better, and 31% say they are convinced that it can help relieve their actual cold and flu symptoms.
“Hot chicken soup can indeed make us feel better when fighting off the winter colds. Scientists have found that the blend of nutrients and vitamins in a traditional chicken soup can have an anti-‐inflammatory effect and help with cold and flu symptoms and can also clear the sinuses helping in turn to relieve congestion.” Nutritionist Dr. Joanna McMillan commented.
Dr. McMillan explained that some foods fill up your stomach without too many kilojoules (such as vegies) and/or remain in your stomach longer, and therefore do a better job of holding off hunger. Foods that contain large amounts of protein, like chicken, and/or dietary fiber or water do a better job of satisfying our hunger.
“As one of our most popular and nutritious meats, chicken can contribute significantly to a high protein diet, shown to be helpful to those wanting to lose weight and maintain weight loss. And for those of us simply looking to eat for optimal health and well-‐being, chicken is an excellent choice.” Dr. McMillan commented.
