Sydney Markets, the largest distribution center in the Southern Hemisphere will celebrate the arrival of the 2013 mango season with the 34th annual Sydney Markets Mango Auction on 4 September.
“Sydney Markets Limited is the traditional home of the mango auction and we are proud to be hosting this every year for the benefit of charities that support our communities. Sydney Markets is proud to support OzHarvest, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the Cancer Council of NSW this year.” Brad Latham, CEO of Sydney Markets Limited commented.
“The Sydney Markets Mango Auction rings in an exciting time for suppliers and buyers, as everyone loves the start of the summer fruit season for the year. This is a great community event and we invite everyone to be part of the festivities and to embrace the community spirit that Sydney Markets is known for.” Nick Martelli, Chairman of the Mango Auction Committee said
Mr Latham explained that Last year, the first box of mangoes raised $50,000 for Sydney-based charities. This highly anticipated event has come a long way since the first auction was held in 1970 where the first box raised $65.
“Prior to auction we keep the mango variety for the first box of the season a closely guarded secret, which builds the excitement at the markets for the charity auction, bidders and participants.” Mr Martelli commented.
