A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.
I was not entirely impressed with this one and watching After Earth almost felt like a chore, it was a flat movie seemingly devoid of any tension and it struck me as the kind of movie that teachers might show as an end of term movie that is slightly more ‘mature’ to year 7 students. In the long run if Jaden Smith ends up pursuing an acting career I really would like to see what he is capable of in movie that is devoid of any involvement of his parents.
But despite this, there actually a couple of good points about this movie. The vision that the filmmakers created of earth one thousand years after human habitation had an almost prehistoric feel to the landscape and the animals. Most notably was that I am pretty sure that this is the first movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan post the sixth sense that doesn’t have that stereotypical ‘twist’ ending.
