Attorney-General, Simon Corbell, today announced that double demerit points will be applied during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, similar to arrangements in New South Wales adding that Double demerit points will apply to speeding drivers from Friday 20 December 2013 to Wednesday 1 January 2014 inclusive.
“Speeding is one of the main causes of road deaths and serious accidents. If drivers exceed the speed limit this Christmas and New Year period by more 15 km/h and up to 30 km/h, six demerit points will be applied. Exceeding the speed limit by 45 km/h or more during this period will result in 12 demerit points being applied and the risk of licence suspension,” Mr Corbell said.
Mr Corbell explained that to encourage drivers to observe the seatbelt rules, both the ACT and NSW will apply double demerit points for seat belt offences. This means that six points can be applied to the licence of any driver not wearing a seatbelt or a driver who permits children to travel in a vehicle without being restrained in a seatbelt or child restraint, Mr Corbell added that Drivers who commit other offences such as running red lights, failing to stop at stop signs or using a hand held mobile phone while driving will receive one extra demerit point.
