The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) reduced Fiji’s full suspension to a suspension from councils of the Commonwealth, permitting Fiji to join a number of Commonwealth activities, including the Commonwealth Games
Five years ago Fiji’s Commonwealth membership was suspended after it refused to hold democratic elections following a coup.
“The UK is pleased that, as a result of this, Fijian athletes will now be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. The details of the arrangements for Fiji’s participation in the Games are now being worked on by the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Organising Committee.” Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister Hugo Swire commented.
The President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), HRH Tunku Imran has welcomed the move by CMAG lifting Fiji’s full suspension, clearing its athletes to compete in the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
“I am delighted to welcome Fiji back into the Commonwealth Games family, and very pleased that they will be able to participate in Glasgow. The Games will be an incredible festival of sport, and the celebrations will be all the more complete with our Fijian friends and colleagues taking part” His Royal Highness commented.
