A young Shaolin follower reunites with his discouraged brothers to form a soccer team using their martial art skills to their advantage.
Anybody out there who loved the cartoonesque Kung Fu craziness of Kung Fu Hustle is going to love Shaolin Soccer. For the record even though Shaolin Soccer was made before Kung Fu Hustle I watched Kung Fu Hustle first
Sports comedies have a tendency to be a tad formulaic and just a little bit cheesy. Sure there was the prerequisite ‘gathering the team’ portion of the movie but I don’t think I noticed the cheesiness so much partly because I was watching an English dub of the movie but mainly because the movie was full of belly laughs and gave me this big warm hug that filled me with a sense of optimism by the time the credits rolled.
I think this might be my new favourite sports comedy and I’ll have to add this to the list of movies when I’m sad.
