Ghetto teenager Derrick longs to be a professional boxer and represent Jamaica at the Olympics, but the gym that will make him a contender is in the opposing ‘garrison’ community, which means he has to risk his life in order to follow his dream.
If you think about it the whole boy from the wrong side of the tracks risking everything to follow his dreams side of the story really wasn’t anything new, if you want to be brutally honest that aspect of the story has been done so many times its older then dirt. But I still found this one very interesting, partly because I’ve never watched a Jamaican movie before (Cool Runnings doesn’t count) and how interesting the role of ‘Dons’ play in garrison communities in Jamaica.
I loved Kevoy Burton’s performance he just seemed to have this amazing on screen presence he great choice for the lead role in the movie.
I really don’t know what I was expecting out of a Jamaican movie but I really was not expecting the subtitles, it made the whole experience of watching a movie in a language I was only just learning.
