Follow the lives of Viago, Deacon and Vladislav – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

When I was first told about this I loved the concept it seemed to be very cool. However, when I actually got around to watching this one I was awash with a awkward ‘why am I watching this?’ and a ‘should I really stick with this all the way to the end?’ For the record yes I did stick with this all the way and the got the overall feeling that there was something that was lacking in the overall execution of this movie, also for the record this is not my favourite movie from New Zealand, my favourite kiwi movie is Event 16 which was released in 2006.
It has since been pointed out to me by my Big Sister’s Better Half that the humour in What we do in the Shadows is very kiwi-centric so as an Australian who has never been to New Zealand, so of course I was going to get the Kiwi sense of humour. I can accept that.
The other drawback of this movie was that it seemed that the filmmakers had no clue as to construct a fight scene. The fight scenes looked as if they were choreographed on the playground of a local primary school.
