In the midst of veteran con man Nicky’s latest scheme, a woman from his past – now an accomplished femme fatale – shows up and throws his plans for a loop.
For those of you who have been regularly reading my reviews might remember that I hold to the point of view that British film makers make better crime movies then American film makers. While I was sitting down getting ready to write this review movie titles such as The Usual Suspects, Reservoir Dogs and Boondock Saints entered my head. Yes, these are all great movies but I still hold that British crime movies have a certain level of flair and intelligence over American crime movies. That being said, Focus even though it is an American movie is still worth watching. However, I kind of have to ask the question, why Will Smith was cast in the lead role for this? Sure he has great comic timing but none of the movies that I have seen him in suggest that he was able to play a criminal mastermind. Personally I would have thought about casting Adrian Lester and it was good to see Margot Robbie cast as the female in the movie.
I thought that the movie made an interesting point about the human and its ability to focus on one thing at a time. I also thought that the use of The Toledo twist (slight spoiler alert), where one of the team shoots another to prove they aren’t in on the scam was a cool plot point that was used by the writers Glenn Ficarra & John Requa.
