When a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play…and it’s all or nothing.
I suppose the most interesting thing that I have found out about this movie was that the screenplay was written William Goldman, the same man who wrote the Princess Bride. It should be noted that the movie is adapted from a novel written by Goldman and published in 1985 called Heat and a remake of a movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds.
I did not see any trailers for this one at the friendly local cinema; by all accounts it had a disastrous run at the cinemas in the US so it had a direct to DVD release here in Australia. To honest I only really bothered with this one because Jason Statham was cast in the lead and despite all the critical hate that might be out there for Wild Card, personally I thought that this was a very watchable movie, I particularly enjoyed the fight scene in the casino, I thought the use of the song White Christmas was an interesting touch to the scene.
The role of Nick Wild was right within the wheelhouse of Jason Statham who has carved out a reputation as an intelligent action star from movies such as The Transporter, The Mechanic and Parker as opposed to some of the other slabs of beef that the filmmakers could have gone to. I loved the scene Milo Ventimiglia and Statham had with Stanley Tucci, which was the catalyst for the finale of the movie.
