Minister for Police and Emergency Services Joy Burch is reminding motorists double demerit penalties will be in effect over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
“Motorists should be aware that double demerits come into effect before the long weekend starts, from the very start of Friday 5 June through to the very end of Monday 8 June,” Ms Burch said. Ms Burch explained that double demerit penalties apply to all speeding and seat belt offences, with one extra demerit point applicable for all other driving offences. Burch went on to point out that During the Queen’s Birthday long weekend last year, ACT Policing issued 106 Traffic Infringement Notices and conducted 1095 random breath tests with 10 people caught over the limit. While no road deaths or serious injuries occurred across the region, there were 13 motor vehicle collisions.
“ACT Policing along with NSW Police will target dangerous driving over this long weekend. This includes drivers that are speeding, distracted, not wearing seat belts, disobeying road rules and driving fatigued, drunk or impaired by drug use.” Ms Burch commented “While our police will do their bit in targeting motorists, it’s up to everyone to drive safely and avoid serious trauma on our roads this weekend.”
