Australia’s richest golf tournament, the Perth International, returns to Lake Karrinyup Country Club in February 2016. Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the men’s event had moved from October to the last weekend in February to help attract the best possible player field.
“For the past three years the Perth International has been held in October, but hosting it earlier in the year means the tournament will now be staged on the back of events in the Middle East and South East Asia, and that will help attract a stronger player field,” Dr Hames said.
The Minister said the Perth International would be the only golf tournament in Australia to receive tri-sanctioning from the PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour. Tri-sanctioning is endorsement for players registered in their individual championships to enter the Perth International and score championship points.
“The tournament has seen some of the world’s best golfers compete in WA including Dustin Johnson, Victor Dubuisson and golf Major winners Charl Schwartzel, Jason Dufner and Geoff Ogilvy, and we look forward to attracting another exciting line-up of golfing celebrities next year.” Dr Hames commented
The Perth International is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia. Dr Hames said hosting international sporting events of this calibre was part of the Government’s strategy to grow the value of tourism from the current $8.7 billion to $12 billion by 2020.
