A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.
I’m not overly familiar with director Jocelyn Moorhouse’s work though I suppose it should be noted that she has previously worked with Hugo Weaving on her 1991 movie Proof, I have vague memories of watching but can’t remember to many details about the movie, maybe I am going to have to watch this one. It should be noted that Australian author Rosalie Ham wrote the novel that the movie was adapted from. The first two acts of the movie might of came across as being a tad predictable but that being said all of that the groundwork was laid brilliantly and led up to a twist that left me more than a little surprised.
Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth both gave great performances and it was good to see that Winslet’s didn’t drift over into soap opera territory. But that would have only happened if the director had of mishandled the movie entirely. There were a lot of the familiar faces that you would expect to see in any Australian Production. I thought that Judy Davis and Hugo Weaving both gave brilliant performances. It was also good to see Sarah Snook who seems to be proving herself to be a talented and versatile actress.
