Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home.
In the Heart of the Sea is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, about the sinking of the American whaling ship Essex in 1820, that inspired the tale of Moby-Dick. In this day and age I know it might be a little politically incorrect to say especially with whales being on the verge extinction but I cannot help but admire the men that the actors in this movie portrayed and how they chose to earn a living. I would also like to venture a suggestion that if Japan wants to continue whaling they should be forced to use 1820’s era whaling technology.
I have watched a few adaptions of Moby Dick but this is probably one of the more interesting versions considering that it delves into the inspiration of the tale, for the record the worst adaption was a lower budget movie where they substituted dragons for whales. With Ron Howard in the director’s chair I knew that I was in safe hands and there is a part of me that loves the visual style of historicals. There were some pretty decent performances though a few of the supporting actors were familiar but not familiar enough for me to remember their names.
