I’m not a politician and probably never will be, we all know that. This is just one of those stupid ‘what if …’ ideas that I’ve thought about off and on for the past few years. I’m sure you all have them from time to time.
Immigration more specifically ‘illegal immigration’ isn’t a bad thing but it isn’t necessarily a good thing either (and yes the in case you’re wondering fence post does get a little uncomfortable at times). I have a question if you were faced with the choice of being hacked to death by somebody following the orders of a lunatic or die trying to get somewhere safe. What would you do? And yes there is a right way and wrong way of doing things including immigration. But in the end if you are going to die, I think it would be a better way to go if you where trying to get a better life for you and your family and not get killed by the lunatic.
We have all heard about the outrage of successive Australian Governments over the facilitation of unauthorized breaches in Australia’s territorial proximity with Indonesia for the purpose of immigration by certain Indonesian Businessman or Businessman in Indonesia and their efforts to send these businessmen out of business. Now I understand that there are those of you out there who would debate me about using the term Businessman to describe what they do and regard them more as criminals, but the point is that they probably regard what they do as a business and as such what they do should be treated as a business and be held liable for all of costs that have been incurred in the running of their businesses. Which can be summed up as an incompetent sub-contracting of unofficial immigration into Australia, now with such extreame levels of incompatence I would assume that there is a significant percentage of these businessmen’s profits that should be recovered on behalf of the Australian people?
Now granted there is little or no chance in this bill being paid (though possibly slightly more than the Mexican government actually paying for Trump’s border wall) just like the tax bill of certain international companies but you can’t help but wonder about the overall cost in maintaining a zero tolerance approach to ‘illegal immigration’ and should the Australian be footing the bill when certain businessman are making a profit from facilitating this immigration.
Haven’t you wondered about the collective cost (that the Australian taxpayers are footing) of the wear and tear on the military equipment and personnel used to intercept these businessmen’s vessels, the cost of the offshore processing of the immigrants and the cost of the trials and subsequent imprisonment of any of the crew of the businessmen’s vessels are in fact costs of conducting their business.
Now if your after some other wild and wacky idea, one that probably has a better chance of success then presenting these ‘businessmen’ with a bill. Perhaps we might consider something more that is more in line with the Australian Government’s already established policy of ‘offshore processing’ and try having, oh say one nice facility a little closer to where the immigrants are setting out from, oh perhaps somewhere in Indonesia (and drive the Businessmen out of Business that way) and provide these immigrants with a safer opportunity then risking ending up in the Australian offshore processing facilities in PNG or Naru. And then we can close these facilities down.
