ACT Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris recently announced that more than 3,600 people have already expressed an interest in the ACT Government’s opt-in garden waste bin scheme, which will start early next year to help households keep their yards beautiful, and our streets neat and tidy.
“Green bins for garden waste is something ACT residents have been telling us they want. We’ve listened, and I’m really excited that green bins will be rolled out across the territory following a pilot program commencing in Weston Creek and Kambah this coming financial year.” Minister Fitzharris commented “So far the feedback from the community has been great, with many families telling us how excited they are to see this scheme get underway. The first step is asking people in Weston Creek and Kambah to register their interest to help determine how many people will want to take part in the scheme, and enable us to keep people informed of its rollout when details are confirmed. It’s fantastic to see more than 3,600 people already expressing interest.” Fitzharris added.
Minister Fitzharris explained that Weston Creek and Kambah were chosen to give the ACT Government a good sample size of residents in an established region of Canberra. These are mature suburbs with established gardens and are broadly representative of the housing profile of the city. The pilot will then inform the future rollout of the green bins scheme to the rest of Canberra. Fitzharris went on to point out that while the vast majority of expressions of interest have come from residents in Weston Creek and Kambah where the pilot will occur, around 150 have come from other Canberra regions. The ACT Government will keep their details and keep them informed as the scheme rolls out.
“The pilot will help us to understand how many waste trucks will be required for a city-wide rollout, the impact that a city-wide rollout may have on existing waste facilities, the regularities of pickups and the need for infrastructure to cater for a broader rollout,” Minister Fitzharris commented.
