Director Paul Feig
Staring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones
Rated PG
Score 1/6 (But only because Jason Reitman did not direct)
Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.
First things first if this is a re-imagination not a reboot. If this actually was a reboot then Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, Dr. Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddmore would have been the main characters probably portrayed by different actors. They weren’t, as we all the main characters were all women. I would like to believe that the world has progressed to a stage where this is not a problem. I accept that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are all comedians though after watching their performances in this movie I will have to refer to them as “Comedians” rather than Comedians because I can see they at least tried to be funny in this movie and if they are as talented as they are supposed to be I am sure that they will redeem themselves and eventually I’ll their abilities in a different light. Just because a studio has the rights to a film franchise it doesn’t mean that they have to exercise them, I suppose the great take away from all of this judging by the overall quality of this movie I can’t help but wonder if Sony was about to lose their rights to the Ghostbuster’s franchise? I know I am climbing on the bandwagon here but the blame for this movie lays directly at the feet of director Paul Feig and his writing partner for this “Movie” Katie Dippold. It would be all too easy to dismiss Feig and Dippold as having the abilities of Uwe Boll and end my review right here and now. Though for the record Boll has shown a degree of talent with his Rampage movies. This could have been funny, this should have been funny and maybe it would have if Feig had of done his job it just might of.
I thought that it was rather telling of the overall public opinion of this ‘movie’ and Mr. Feig that three days after its Australian cinematic release date that while I was watching this at the friendly neighborhood cinema I was alone in my 8:30pm session. Granted it was a Sunday but things don’t look good for Ghostbusters. I’d say there might be a lesson in this for Feig in the merits of a director of a movie in calling out an entire fandom and calling them a bunch of sexist morons (there might have actually been sexist morons within the greater fandom of Ghostbusters) but things might come back and bite you in the ass. Enjoy your status as the next “Uwe Boll” Mr. Feig.
