An uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord.
First things first this movie or its potential sequel should not be confused as to have any association with the 1995 movie Heat directed by Michael Mann and starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer (I really do hope that was some kind of joke).
Yes, when I watched Ghostbusters I dumped on Paul Feig pretty hard, but there is the rule of 5 that I suppose needs to be taken into account. For those of you who haven’t heard me talk about the rule of 5 it basically states that there is 5 movies before you can accurately access the talent of a given writer, director or actor. Following this review you can expect reviews for 2015 movie Spy and his 2011 movie Bridesmaids. Which by reckoning, will bring the grand total of Paul Feig movies that I have watched to 5 considering that I have also watched his 2006 movie Unaccompanied Minors.
I’ll admit it this actually had the potential to be something decent. I’ll say it again The Heat actually had the potential to be something good (the opening credits actually had a vibe that reminded me of The Nice Guys) but the ball was dropped by Feig and his writing partner Katie Dippold (though Feig did not write this one and it should be clarified they worked together on Ghostbusters). Now what could have possibly saved The Heat was if the crude humour was dialed back by about 5 and it would have given some jokes that could have been funny the chance to actually be funny.
I will admit that perhaps that I might be a little overly critical with this next part but the explosion in the warehouse during the climax of the movie, what was up with that? The explosion looked as if it was more at home in a bad science-fiction movie from the 90’s. I mean if you are going to have an explosion in your movie and you are going to use a CGI explosion (even if it is for one aspect of a given sequence), be sure to have the money in the budget to make it look as if it was done right.
