Godzilla is pitted against his mechanical counterpart, Mechagodzilla. Humans are under attack by the green beast. With little hope left, they build the giant man-piloted robot Mechagodzilla to defend the world. (Godzilla against Mechagodzilla)

One year after the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, the two monsters along with Mothra face off in a conclusive battle royale. (Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S)

I suppose technically considering that I am reviewing two movies in this review Godzilla against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S this could be considered as being my Mecha-Streisand review kind of (though for the record, no I did not watch the twelfth episode of the first season of South Park ‘Mecha-Streisand’ for The Movie Boards). For the record I suspect that watching these movies in reverse order might mess my head just a little bit, especially when I get to the first of the three series. The increased production values across the millennium series particularly the visually effects are noticeable in these two movies. The telltale black outline around different elements of a scene (that suggest that they were shot at a different time and inserted at a later date) have become even less noticeable. Though for the record there is what looks to be an increased American involvement in Tokyo S.O.S.

When it comes to sequels I might be overly precious about a couple of things, being that there needs directorial continuity and there was with Masaaki Tezuka directing both movies. Although some of the actors did feature in both movies, I thought that it was a little unfortunate that Yumiko Shaku who portrayed Akane Yashiro was featured in Tokyo S.O.S but only in a minor role. Okay there was a little character development surrounding Mothra it was revealed in Tokyo S.O.S that Mothra has The Shobijin (twin fairies portrayed by Masami Nagasawa and Chihiro Ôtsuka) to help it interact with the human world.
These movies, not just Godzilla against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S are sure-fire cures for Weekend afternoon boredom. They are not award winning by any stretch of the imagination but with science fiction/fact terms such as Masers and DNA computing systems and giant monsters fighting. There should be enough to keep everybody happy.
