Staring Louis Theroux

Score 3/6
Louis Theroux documents his investigation into what goes on behind the scenes of the infamous Church of Scientology.
I’m familiar with Louis Theroux’s work mostly through watching his weird weekends documentary series. I got the impression that My Scientology movie is different from his other work mainly because of the use of actors to recreate incidents that are alleged to have happened. I say alleged because when dealing with these claims the church of scientology seems to have the standard response of that the people making the claims are lying and are seriously unhinged.
The recreations themselves are interesting and the actor that was cast to play David Miscavige is indeed talented but I can’t shake the feeling that the recreations also lower the overall tone of the movie to that of Crimewatch and other reality legal television shows. I’ve always thought that Documentary film making was above that.
Though there where some moments that I really would like to have been a fly on the wall to witness firsthand most notably the church efforts to make a documentary what looks to have been about Louis Theroux’s documentary.
