Footy fans will have access to free public transport this year with new and expanded MAC Footy Express services announced for the 2017 season. The Motor Accident Commission, the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs and the State Government have again come together to offer free public transport to Adelaide Oval for the AFL season, which starts this week.
“Providing free public transport for footy fans is one of the ways we can help to reduce the cost of a day out for families. With the enormous popularity of games at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval, the free services allow us to move large numbers of fans to and from games much faster than if they had to buy or swipe tickets.” South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan commented.
Minister Mullighan explained that this year an extra service has been created, nine services have been expanded and one discontinued. The launch coincides with a series of new advertisements for the Motor Accident Commission’s Game Changer road safety campaign.
“In addition to promoting the free service and our Game Changer road safety messages, MAC is again using the partnership to engage high profile AFL players as road safety ambassadors. It’s great to have Crows player Sam Jacobs and Port’s Brad Ebert, continuing as MAC’s Road Safety Ambassadors and that the clubs will again help promote road safety messages throughout the season to their supporters.” Motor Accident Commission Partnerships and Community Engagement Manager Matt Hanton commented.
Minister Mullighan explained that the MAC Footy Express services begin this weekend with the Round 1 clash between the Adelaide Crows and Greater Western Sydney on Sunday. Last year approximately 446,000 footy fans travelled to the Adelaide Oval via public transport – a massive increase from the 133,000 fans who caught public transport to Football Park in 2013.
