For Film Sake Festival- Burqa Boxers

In a culture that values beauty, delicacy, refinement and submission as the prized traits to the ultimate feminine career fulfillment, marriage, young Muslim women in Kiddirpur, Kolkata challenge stereotypes, learning boxing with Razia Shabnam, one of the first Indian women to become a boxing coach and an international referee.

For those of you who liked to be warned about it a head of time bring your reading glasses there’s going to be subtitles.

With this about to be screened at the For Films Sake I was going to start this review off by saying something clichéd by saying something to all the men out there along the lines of ‘you will gain brownie points by going to the FFS festival and watching Burqa Boxers with your wives or girlfriends’ the clear line of thinking being men like sports and Burqa Boxers is a sports documentary.

Now it should be noted that I’m completely unfamiliar with director Alka Raghuram’s work and one of the best things about reviewing movies is when I’m pleasantly surprised and it turns out to be nothing like what I expected.
Now what I’m about to say might come across as a little new age or perhaps a little pretentious, their are elements of “tribalism” at play here. Now what I mean by “tribalism” is being able to close your eyes look into your heart of hearts and answer one of the most simplest questions about yourself “I’m a ….. ” something that some of these girls featured in this movie at one point denied to them.
