A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s mysterious family estate.
This is probably the first horror movie that I have watched in a while, for those of you who might not be aware of it I’m not the biggest fan of the horror genre and for the record if I hadn’t seen Allison Williams promoting this on the Stephen Colbert Show there is a chance I would have let myself miss Get Out when it came to the cinema.
Get Out was Jordan Peele’s first time in the director’s chair and I was kind of impressed with what he delivered considering that he is best known for his comedy work particularly his work with Keegan-Michael Key. There are times when filmmakers who are primarily known for one genre who switch to another make a bad movie because they did not fully understand the genre that they were going into, Peele did not fall into this trap by blending his script with some comic moments. Though for the record yes Get Out is a good movie but personally I would stop short of calling this ‘must see event’ as some other people have been.
Fans of horror movies that rely on jump scares might not like Get Out that much because it has more of a creep ‘what the heck is going?’ factor. This is full of layered characters with great performances by Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, both of whom I was not overly familiar with. The overall subtle lighting and combined with Get Out’s overall creep factor enough to make me to think twice about being hypnotized for a while.
