The Andrews Labor Government’s expanded School Breakfast Clubs have now served more than two million meals across Victoria – giving children from families in need a brighter and healthier start to the day. Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino joined children at Seaford Primary School’s Breakfast Club this morning to mark the milestone.
Minister for Education James Merlino explained that since the launch of the program at the start of last year, School Breakfast Clubs have been providing 50,000 free breakfasts every week at 500 of Victoria’s most disadvantaged schools. Seaford Primary’s Breakfast Club is one of hundreds enjoying fresh apples this week thanks to a generous donation from family-owned produce company Montague Fresh, based in Narre Warren North.
“I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact School Breakfast Clubs can have and I look forward to seeing millions more breakfasts being served, so students can start the day on a full stomach.” Minister Merlino commented.

Research by Foodbank Victoria, who delivers School Breakfast Clubs in partnership with the Labor Government, shows the program is making a real difference for children and staff. Since the program started last year, nine out of 10 teachers have seen improved student concentration, seven out of 10 have noted improved attendance and more than eight out of 10 teachers say they now have better relationships with their students.
“It is only with the added support of volunteers and local communities that breakfast clubs are able operate regularly and we can ensure every child has a healthy start to their day.” Foodbank CEO Dave McNamara commented.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – it sets our kids up to concentrate, learn and be at their best.” Premier Andrews commented “One in seven children arrive at school on an empty stomach and our School Breakfast Clubs mean these kids now get a nutritious start to the day so they can get the most out of their education.”
The Premier went on to point out that the $13.7 million School Breakfast Club program is another example of how the Labor Government is tackling disadvantage so all children can reach their potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.
