The Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon deal with a visiting female journalist and a German spy as World War II draws to its conclusion.
Dad’s Army is based on a sitcom that ran on the BBC from 31st of July 1968 until 13th of November 1977. For those of you who might not have known the original series that the movie was based partly on co-writer and creator Jimmy Perry’s experiences in the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV, later known as the Home Guard). Perry who was 16 when he joined the Home Guard is said to have partly resembled Private Pike.
It should also be noted that this is the second movie that was based on the series the other was made in 1971.
Dad’s Army was one of the television shows that I watched after school, if I recall it was on the ABC around 6PM. Anyway, even though I have put off watching this movie for a little while I was certain of the kind of movie that I was install for and I was pleasantly surprised of the serious tone that the movie had in the beginning though it quickly turned into the laugh out loud movie that I was expecting. There was a few groanworthy moments and more than a few differences to the source material. The differences where to be expected given that the runtime of the movie was roughly 3 times longer than the average episode, though the movie did tip its hat to its origins.
Actors from the original series Frank Williams and Ian Lavender appeared in the movie though of course only Williams reprised his role.
Catherine Zeta-Jones gave a good performances though both Toby Jones and Bill Nighy should be congratulated for the performances for bringing the comedic tension between Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson to the screen and all the nostalgic feelings that came along with it.
