Western Australian Water Minister Dave Kelly this week emphasised the value of water for people living on the streets, when he inspected Perth’s first hybrid shower and laundry van for the homeless.
“Orange Sky’s vans show that a small amount of water can make such a difference to those in need.” Minister Kelly commented “Simple activities we take for granted like showers, clean clothes and conversations can go a long way in restoring someone’s self-respect and dignity.”
The Minister went on to explain that the Orange Sky van – named Lottie – has been built with the support of the State Government through Lotterywest and the Water Corporation. The Minister also said that the van will make a difference to the lives of homeless people by providing something most people take for granted – a warm shower and clean clothes.
“I am encouraged to see Orange Sky design these vans to be sustainable and waterwise, ensuring every drop of water is used wisely.” Minister Kelly commented “It is great for the State Government, through its agencies Lotterywest and Water Corporation, to be involved in an initiative that offers a simple but practical service to some of the most vulnerable people in Perth.”
The Minister said that the national charity has operated mobile laundry vans in Perth since early 2016, but this is the first opportunity for homeless people to also take a shower in an Orange Sky van at the same time. The Minister also explained that it takes about one hour to wash and dry a load of clothes, and during this time Orange Sky volunteers make the biggest difference, by fostering conversation and connections with people who need it the most. Orange Sky relies on public donations, with just $6 allowing one cycle to wash someone’s clothes.
