Around 8,000 Tuggeranong residents have opted-in for a green waste bin and will receive a fortnightly collection service for their garden organic green waste. Brindabella MLAs Mick Gentleman and Joy Burch, on behalf of Minister for City Services Meegan Fitzharris, have welcomed the first collections of green bins in Tuggeranong.
“Green waste bin collections started today in Tuggeranong, with Gowrie, Macarthur and Fadden the first suburbs off the rank for collection,” Minister Gentleman commented “The take up in Tuggeranong has exceeded the initial 6,000 expressions of interest received and it is great to see residents taking advantage of this fantastic service.”
Joy Burch MLA said Tuggeranong residents have some beautiful established gardens and the green bin service will make it easier for residents to maintain the upkeep of their yards. “Whether you’re a green thumb or a beginner gardener, it is a great way to get rid of your grass clippings and other green waste with an easy fortnightly collection from your kerb,” Member for Brindabella Joy Burch commented “If you live in Tuggeranong and are interested in getting one of the bins that have started to pop up in your street, then it is not too late to register. A one-off registration fee of $50 is required, with eligible concession card holders exempt from payment.”
Minister Fitzharris explained that registrations in Weston Creek and Kambah have also exceeded 8,700, representing more than 50% of eligible households in this area. Fitzharris went on to point out that with collections in Tuggeranong coming on line, residents in the suburbs of Weston, Stirling, Waramanga, Fisher and Kambah East currently in green week for green bin collections will change to yellow week. These residents had their green bins collected last week and they will be collected again this week and every fortnight onwards. Further collections changes will occur as the program grows and rolls out across the city, however, these disruptions will be kept to a minimum wherever possible.
Belconnen residents will receive their green bins next, with collections expected to start from September 2018. Information about Belconnen registrations will be available by mid-2018.
