Debbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.
it probably would have been a lot easier and just ignore this movie and not write a review for it, considering how monumentally slapped down by various people on the internet. Was an all-female Ocean’s movie needed? I do not know, but what I will say is that there is a noticeable difference between the quality Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Thirteen. Was the franchise dead and buried after the release of thirteen in 2007 no. But I am sure there was more than a few people checking the franchise to see if it had taken its last breath. Was Ocean’s Eight enough to breathe new life into the franchise? No. Did the all-female cast deserve all the criticism that has been levelled at it by the internet? Not really. Both Sandra Bullock & Cate Blanchett certainly are talented actresses, but this certainly was not the kind of movie to showcase their talents in, they just sort of coasted through the movie. Rihanna certainly seems to be becoming a better actress, the only person that I would have like to have seen not cast in the movie was James Corden.
the people that are really to blame for the Ocean’s Eight’s lack of quality was director/writer Gary Ross and writer Olivia Milch. It was good to see the acknowledgement of the previous movies with the cameo by Elliot Gould as Reuben and the explanation of what happened to Danny was vague enough to leave filmmakers with options. Elements of the previous movies where used in Ocean’s Eight particularly with how Debbie and Lou interacted with each other at times, but I really would have liked to have seen Eight try harder to be its own movie.
I like watching heist movies that have the ‘magician’s explanation’ moment at the end. But my biggest problem with this movie was that the heist itself seemed to hinge on what was a high school prank.
