Serena Williams will face current world No.2 Roger Federer in the 2019 Mastercard Hopman Cup mixed teams tournament, as part of one of the strongest line-ups in the event’s 31-year history. The 23-time Grand Slam winner will represent the United States of America and will pair with rising star Frances Tiafoe. Current world No.2 Roger Federer, who holds 20 Grand Slam titles, will again partner with Belinda Bencic to defend Team Switzerland’s 2018 title. “What better reason for interstate and overseas tennis fans to travel to WA than the unique opportunity to see Serena Williams and partner Frances Tiafoe represent the United States and take on Swiss team Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic for the first time.” Western Australian Tourism Minister Paul Papalia commented “With Williams and Federer considered to be two of the greatest tennis players of all time, this highly anticipated match will attract worldwide attention and promote Perth and our State on the global stage.”
2018 runners-up, comprising of talented current world No.3 Angelique Kerber and world No.5 Alexander Zverev for Team Germany will return as part of the elite field. Australia’s highest ranked tennis player, Ashleigh Barty will also take to the court with teammate and world No.48 Matthew Ebden. Barty is currently ranked world No.19 in singles and world No.7 in doubles.
“World-class events such as the Mastercard Hopman Cup play a vital role in driving visitation and changing perceptions of Perth, which is part of the State Government’s Two-Year Action Plan to grow the number of visitors to WA.” Minister Papalia commented “These popular events also provide a significant boost to the economy, with last year’s Mastercard Hopman Cup attracting a record-breaking crowd of more than 106,000 people and generating $4 million of visitor expenditure from out-of-State visitors”
