Now in its third year, the Village Cinemas’ Unscene short film competition was back in full swing and last night celebrated some of Australia’s most talented aspiring filmmakers. Presented by The Cinema Crew podcast host, Kyran Wheatley at Rivoli Cinemas, guests enjoyed a series of short films created by aspiring film makers addressing the theme of ‘Choices’. This is also the first year that Swinburne University has joined as a presenting partner for the competition. Competing with over 120 entrants, and after countless hours spent planning, scripting and editing, Laura Binnie was announced the first-place winner of the 2018 Unscene short film competition. Her film Eggs for Breakfast awarded her $10,000, and an assortment of Black Magic film equipment. Her short film will also screen in selected Village Cinemas foyers across Victoria. Honoured to take home the top prize, Laura said it was the excitement of seeing her film on the big screen that was most rewarding.
“The night was absolutely surreal. It was so special to see my vision come to life in a way that I’ve dreamt about for years. I have no doubt winning this competition will open more doors for me and my career and prize itself will certainly help with my next projects!” Laura commented.
Marketing Manager at Village Cinemas, Nic Robin said that in second and third place was Luke Goodall and Marc Gallagher’s film, Choose Your Own Adventure and Samuel Thang Man’s film Bygone, respectively.
“We had an overwhelming response to thisyear’s Unscene short film competition, with more entrants than ever beforewhich shows just how much the industry is growing. Without the hard work of ouraspiring Australian filmmakers, we wouldn’t have some of the industry’s bestfilm, like Mad Max, The Dressmaker, Red Dog, Priscilla, The Castle and Muriel’sWedding – films that have shaped our lives and shown that Australian filmmakersare a force to be reckoned with.” Mr. Robin commented “We have no doubt, theentrants in Unscene will go on to write the next chapter in our film history. We want to congratulate all filmmakers who entered in this year’s competition. The passion and enthusiasm that comes through each year is truly inspiring andwe can’t wait to see what incredible talent next year brings.”
