Hornblower: The Examination for Lieutenant

Director Andrew Grieve
Starring Ioan Gruffudd, Robert Lindsay, Denis Lawson
Rated PG
Score 4/6

While Lt. Hornblower studies for his promotion examination, he is distracted by the serious supply problems that face his crew.

For those of you keeping track The Examination for Lieutenant is another one of the movies in the series to have its title changed The Fire Ships for the US market.

I enjoyed Andrew Tiernan’s performance as Bunting, the subplot that his character was involved in was the emotional heart of the movie. It was good to see Hornblower starting to grow as an officer and that he clearly cares for the welfare of his men.
Considering that this movie was released in 1998 and the book its adapted from Mr. Midshipman Hornblower was published in 1950 it fun to look back on things with a degree of hindsight because one of my favourite lines from the movie could be construed that Captain Pellew foresaw Britain’s difficult with Brexit. One of my other favourite lines points out the benefits of serving as cook on ship.
