The Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Entertainment’s action adventure film Godzilla vs. Kong has begun filming on the Gold Coast this week.
Godzilla vs. Kong which is being filmed at Village Roadshow Studios as well as on location on the Gold Coast follows the filming of Paramount Pictures’ live action feature Dora the Explorer in Queensland. It also comes after blockbuster Aquaman – also filmed in Queensland – hit $1 billion at the box office.
Acting Queensland Premier Cameron Dick said it was another exciting milestone for the State’s screen industry.
“Queensland will once again play a starring role in producing world-class screen content for global audiences, The direct spend and jobs created in Queensland by Godzilla vs. Kong will be similar in size to the Dora the Explorer production.” Mr Dick Commented “There will also be training opportunities in areas where Screen Queensland has identified a skills shortage in order to train local people with international experts in their fields. This is all possible because of the Palaszczuk Government’s Production Attraction Strategy and commitment to backing the screen industry which creates jobs, boosts the economy and tourism and builds Queensland’s reputation as the home of film.”
Godzilla vs. Kong has been previously shooting in Hawaii and will spend over 26 weeks in Queensland including pre- and principal production. Mr Dick said the Premier met with Legendary Pictures executives in Los Angeles in June last year to negotiate for this creature feature to come to Queensland.
“This meeting provided an opportunity to build on the strong and productive relationship the Palaszczuk Government has fostered with Legendary Entertainment and follows on from Kong: Skull Island and Pacific Rim: Uprising also shooting in Queensland,” Mr Dick commented “We will continue to promote Queensland as a destination of choice for production, post-production and innovative collaborations that extend audience experiences in ways of exhibitions and cultural tourism.”
This week it was announced that Warner Bros.’ Aquaman reached $1.02 Billion at the worldwide box office. The film injected more than $144 million into the Queensland economy and will continue delivering significant tourism benefits with fans booking holidays to Queensland to see some of the stunning locations featured in Aquaman such as Currumbin Beach, North Stradbroke Island and The Spit at the Gold Coast.
“The Palaszczuk Government remains steadfast in creating a permanent screen industry for Queensland and securing thousands of jobs for our locals and spin offs into tourism, trade, hospitality and other sectors of the local economy as well as positioning our state as a creative, dynamic, innovative and growing economy,” Mr Dick commented.
Warner Bros. will release Godzilla vs. Kong in May 2020.
