Laid-back suburban everyman Darren “Dazza” Cook loves to entertain his friends and neighbours with his weekly backyard barbecues, utilizing the ancient rum-barrel barbecue that family legend prescribes as having come from Cpt James Cook’s Endeavour. Unexpectedly thrust into the limelight by his employer when an International BBQ Festival comes to town, Dazza needs to sharpen up his act, so enlists the guidance of the mysterious Scottish chef known only as “The Butcher”. As Dazza hones his chops perfecting the perfect steak, his 12-year-old son Jayden is challenged to prove the dubious Cook family ancestral link.

Alright, even though I am posting the review for The BBQ on the 27th it somehow seemed appropriate to watch this on the 26th of January.
The BBQ is a light-hearted movie that’s good for the entire family, though it might be the type of movie that is immediately rewatchable. For those of you who are wondering this is the second movie I have come across that was directed by Stephen Amis, the other being the 2012 movie The 25th Reich. An unrelated piece of trivia about Amis was that he was the cinematographer for the mid-nineties ABC series Funky Squad.
Shane Jacobson gave an okay performance, Magda Szubanski was hilairious as ‘The Butcher’ and I got the impression that chef Manu Feildel’s character wasn’t fully fleshed out. This could have been because The BBQ had an overall runtime of under 90 minutes.
