Victoria, Australia’s home of cricket, will be the epicentre of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, hosting more games than any other state. Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula joined some of Victoria’s best cricketers today to announce that Victoria will host 19 games across the Men’s and Women’s Tournaments. The Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the final for the Men’s and Women’s Tournaments, as well as six group stage matches in the Men’s Tournament featuring Australia, India, England and New Zealand.
“Victoria is the sporting capital of Australia so it’s only right that the biggest games in ICC T20 World Cup will be played right here at the MCG, Kardinia Park and at the Junction Oval.” Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula commented.
Minister Pakula said that In a massive boost for Geelong, Kardinia Park Stadium will host six group stage matches in the men’s draw, attracting thousands of fans. There will also be five matches over five days at the newly upgraded Junction Oval, including a blockbuster double header before the Women’s Final at the MCG.
“With 17 matches and both the men’s and women’s final, Victoria will be the epicentre of the T20 World Cup – attracting fans from around the world and providing a significant boost to our economy.” Minister Pakula commented.
The Minister explained that for the first time in its history, the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 will feature two stand-alone events. The women’s tournament will be held in February and March, before the men play in October and November. Minister Pakula also said that a sell-out crowd for the Women’s Final on International Women’s Day would make history – breaking the world record attendance for any women’s sport fixture.
Minister Pakula said that with the love of cricket continuing to grow across the world, thousands of fans are expected to converge on Victoria to see the world’s best players compete. Sporting events like ICC T20 World Cup 2020 are a major international drawcard for Victoria, helping to boost our economy, showcase the best of our state to world and inspire our up-and-coming sportsmen and women.
