Singled Out – Melbourne Documentary Film Festival

Director Mariona Guiu & Ariadna Relea
Score 5/6

Singled [Out] tells the story of five educated women in four corners of the world: Jules in Melbourne, Manu in Barcelona, Shu and Yang in Shanghai, and Melek in Istambul -they all travel solo in a world where pairing up is the norm. Together with the voices of some well-known experts in the areas of sociology, law and demography, the film unveils modern love in the era of choice, and is a journey to the heart of being a single woman today.

I’m not sure if I would go to see Singled [Out] if I saw it advertised at a film festival. This ended up being an interesting documentary to watch and I would like to think that given the chance I would watch more documentaries involving the directors Mariona Guiu and Ariadna Reiea.
I enjoyed how Singled [Out] with Jules on stage in Melbourne and what she said has still got me thinking about is something a problem, even though you don’t realise that it is and society says that it is.
I suppose what really stuck out to me about these documentaries was the attitude to towards single woman in Turkey and China. It was particularly eye opening how the documentary discussed how in Turkey there are moves to demolish equal citizenship and gender equality in the Turkish constitution. It was also interesting to see how engrained attitudes towards single woman seem to be in Chinese culture and how a parent’s attitude towards their single daughters change from when they are in the twenties to when they are in their thirties. It was also interesting to see how some highly educated woman in China feel the need to downplay their achievements for the sake of the male ego.
