Works are underway to restore Ballarat’s nearly 150-year-old Her Majesty’s Theatre, thanks to support from the Andrews Labor Government. Two stages of restoration works have now been completed – including essential remediation works to support the ongoing use of the building. Treasurer Tim Pallas today visited the theatre to announce $10 million for stage three of restoration works, which will bring the theatre up to modern standards, create construction jobs and breathe new life into Ballarat’s performing arts scene.
“Her Majesty’s Theatre showcases some of our finest artistic talents and is beloved by locals and arts lovers – it is a pleasure to restore her to her former glory – and boost jobs at the same time.” Mr. Pallas commented.
Pallas explained that stages one and two of the project were funded by the City of Ballarat and Heritage Victoria – providing $5.3 million and $2 million respectively. Heritage Victoria’s grant was provided under the $60 million Living Heritage program, which safeguards and reactivate Victoria’s heritage icons. Works include installation of new front and rear venue lifts, accessibility improvements, orchestra pit thrust lifts, an upgrade to auditorium lighting, new box office and balustrade works.
“This $10 million restoration is just another way we’re supporting the Ballarat community, so that it is a better place to live, work and raise a family.” Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison commented.
“How wonderful to see this iconic theatre get the love and care she deserves – we hope the Ballarat community gets another 150 years of performances under her roof.” Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle commented.
“These additional funds will make Her Majesty’s Ballarat stronger and able to deliver an even more accessible and enjoyable performing arts experience for our residents, performers and patrons.” Ballarat Mayor Samantha McIntosh commented.
Established in 1875, Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat is a nationally significant performing arts centre that is home to Australia’s longest running grand eisteddfod, Royal South Street. The theatre hosts around 75,000 patrons and 15,000 performers each year.
