American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
It should noted that some of the criticisms levelled at this movie made by other reviewers appear to have been made by people judging society in the 60’s with the sensitive sensibilities of 2019. Which is not the most intelligent thing to do.
Not being the biggest car racing fan I’m not entirely sure why I decided to go to see this one other then its on the list of things that I need to see. I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting of Ford v Ferrari, I suppose I was expecting something that was very serious. Don’t get me wrong this does have its very serious moments but this was balanced out with some equally hilarious scenes, such as the scene with the wrench.
Even though I was totally unfamiliar with the history of the war between Ferrari and Ford (perhaps I should have done a little homework before going to see this) I enjoyed the ride that I was taken on, I have to admit that I am starting to enjoy James Mangold’s ability as a director. Looking at Mangold’s filmography it really seems that when it comes to genre he is a jack of all trades.
I loved the onscreen chemistry between Matt Damon and Christian Bale, it had a big brother little brother dynamic to it. It was good to see a few familiar faces I might not have seen on screen in awhile such as Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe who I loved to hate. I must admit that I mistook Tracy Letts who played Henry Ford II for Jeff Daniels.
