With 400,000 people expected to head to the bay for the 40th St Kilda Festival next Sunday, the Andrews Labor Government is adding hundreds of extra tram services to get people to the festivities more quickly.
“If you’re heading to the festival, leave the car at home. More than 650 extra tram services will be added throughout the day, making it easy for those arriving from Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations.” Victorian Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne commented.

Minister Horne explained that Public transport is the best way to get to the event – with reduced parking and a number of road closures in place between 3:00am and midnight on Sunday, 9 February. The minister added that more than 650 extra tram services will be added to routes 16a, 12a, 96a and 3a between 2:00pm and 11:00pm on Sunday to help get crowds to festival sites along Fitzroy Street, Acland Street, Jacka Boulevard and The Esplanade. Trams will travel to festival locations every five to eight minutes, with services connecting to trains at both Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations.
The Minister also pointed out that passengers at Southern Cross can catch routes 96a and 12a to Fitzroy Street while those travelling from Flinders Street station can take routes 3a, 5, 16a, 64, and 67 to St Kilda Junction. To allow festivalgoers to easily walk around the festival, which covers a large part of St Kilda, a series of major and local roads will be closed to traffic from 3:00am until the end of the event. Bus routes 600, 922, 246, 606, 623 and 923 will still operate, but will be diverted as a result of the road closures.
“The St Kilda festival is the country’s biggest community festival – and we are making it easy to get around and enjoy everything it has to offer.” Minister Horne commented.
Minster Horne also said that St Kilda Festival is Australia’s largest community festival with live local music, workshops, kids’ entertainment, sport, dance, carnival rides, food and drinks, markets, shopping and a whole lot more on offer.
