A sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon.
The Call of the Wild was adapted from a short adventure novel of the same name by Jack London, published in 1903. It should also be noted that there have been several film adaptions of The Call of The Wild the first being in 1923.
Parents of sensitive children should note that there are some scenes that their children might find disturbing.
Going into this I was aware that a lot of people disliked The Call of the Wild because of the use of CGI dogs in the movie. I totally accept that. However, this is the kind of movie that would have royally pissed off a large section of the movie going public if the filmmakers used live dogs in the movie. So, the use of CGI dogs was a good idea by the filmmakers. There is also some gorgeous shots of the wilderness, though from what I have read the movie was not shot on location.
Actor and stunt coordinator Terry Notary gave a great performance as the stand in for the CGI creation of Buck, there was a humanistic quality to Buck and all of the dogs in the movie. There is a moment between the dogs seemed to be a homage to the finale of Rocky V.
Even though he acted as a narrator for the entire movie I thought that it was an interesting move by the filmmakers to have Harrison Ford actually on screen for about half the movie. Both Omar Cy and Cara Gee gave great performances as Perrault and Françoise. I was a little surprised to see that Karen Gillian was cast in this and then there is Dan Stevens’ portrayal of Hal. One of those characters you’ll love to hate.
