A boy and his brother run away from home and hitch cross country with the help of a girl they meet to compete in the ultimate video game championship.
I know I do not normally review family movies but, the cinemas are closed, and The Wizard is a classic. So that is a good enough excuse. Its been years since I have watched this and I suppose the only reason why I decided to re-watch this was because a 10 things you didn’t know about The Wizard appeared in my recommendations on YouTube a few months back.
I would not say that I am overly familiar with director Todd Holland’s work, I had to look at his filmography to figure out if I have watched anything, he has done other than The Wizard. I might have once or twice.
I did feel that The Wizard was a little cliched especially in the lead up to the finale but its heart is in the right place and it didn’t sight of that and that is what you want out of a good family movie.
Fred Savage, Luke Edwards and Jenny Lewis all gave decent performances though part of me would have liked to have seen a couple with their characters just being kids because those moments where some of the more funnier moments in the movie.
Will Seltzer gave a great performance as Putnam, I couldn’t shake the thought in my head about Seltzer’s character that even though he ‘makes money off of little kids’ judging by the character’s look he should never be allowed near kids this is highlighted by the “He touched my breasts!” scene. I also loved the rivalry that Seltzer’s Putnam had with Beau Bridges’ Sam Woods.
