The German war machine is in retreat. Two American M 18 tank destroyers are sent to root out a diehard group of Nazis holed up in the Harz Mountains.

Before we get to far into things it should be noted that Saints and Soldiers: Battle of the Tanks in some countries is also known by its original title Saints and Soldiers: The Void. It should also be noted that there are two other movies released before Battle of the Tanks Saints and Soldiers released in 2003 and Saints and Soldiers: Airborne Creed released in 2012. The entire trilogy has been directed by Ryan Little.

I’ll admit that even though the Saints and Soldiers movies are all in essence standalone movies it might have been a good idea to revisit the other two movies before tackling Battle of the Tanks.

Whenever I come across an independent movie that is a war I’m always a little bit worried that the filmmaker’s eyes are to big for the stomach, because if they try to tell a story that might to epic for their budget because it shows. There is no need to worry about that with Battle of the Tanks it seems to concentrate more on its characters then trying to bring an epic battle scene to the screen. I have come across director Ryan Little’s work before and there are a couple of movies has directed that are not as good as they could have been, it should be noted that his Saints and Soldiers movies don’t fall into that category. And it didn’t hurt that he brought some beautiful countryside to the screen.
K. Danor Gerald, Adam Gregory and Ben Urie all gave decent performances and had characters you could actually emotionally invest in and had noticeable character arcs, something that some mainstream movies have a habit of occasionally overlooking.
